SMDC Enhances Council Leadership and Regulatory Expertise
The Seychelles Medical and Dental Council (SMDC) recently participated in a capacity-building workshop alongside fellow health regulatory bodies, held from 23 to 24 July 2025. This intensive two-day programme focused on strengthening professional self-regulation and enhancing the effectiveness of council leadership.
Participants delved into the fundamentals of health professional regulation, exploring the critical roles and functions of regulatory councils. The workshop addressed core principles of professional self-regulation and robust council governance, while also covering key topics such as soft-touch regulation, registration and accreditation procedures, and the mutual recognition of qualifications.
The agenda further included discussions on medical education, continuous professional development (CPD), and innovative approaches to fitness to practise and complaint management.
From 25 to 27 July, the programme transitioned to personalised technical sessions tailored to the unique needs of each council. This support enabled delegates to address specific regulatory challenges and translate general knowledge into practical improvements for governance and operations.
The workshop was facilitated by Commissioner Josephine Mwakutuya of the Zimbabwe Health Commission, a distinguished regulator and former Registrar of the Medical and Dental Council of Zimbabwe. With over 20 years of leadership in professional regulation, Commissioner Mwakutuya brought invaluable expertise and guidance, supporting the ongoing professionalisation of health regulation in Seychelles.
SMDC remains committed to advancing the standards of health professional regulation, fostering excellence, and ensuring high-quality care for all.
